The B.M.S. Institute of Technology and Management (abbreviated as BMSIT&M), is a private engineering college in Bangalore, Karnataka, India affiliated to the Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum. It was founded by B S Narayana, son of educationist B M Sreenivasaiah, and is managed by the B M S Educational Trust. It is the sister institution of B M S College of Engineering, a well established government aided engineering college in India. B M S Institute of Technology is recognized as a Research Centre by VTU. B M S Institute of Technology is located on SH-9, KA, a little distance away from Bangalore, in an open and sparsely populated and built area, known as Avalahalli. Initially, starting out with six disciplines of engineering, viz., Electronics and Communication, Computer Science, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Mechanical Engineering,information science,Civil Engineering,the college offers a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Information Science, and a Bachelor of Architecture degree, in addition to Bachelor of Engineering degrees in the five aforementioned disciplines. The college was granted the status of a Research Institution by the Visvesvaraya Technological University in 2005.

Campus
B.M.S. Institute of Technology's 21 acre (10 ha) campus about 5 km north of Yelahanka Satellite Town, on SH-9. The campus contains The Main Academic Block, the B S Narayan memorial Block, the Administrative Block, and three blocks of the boys' hostel, an amphitheatre, and several sports pitches and courts. The Academic block houses the departments of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Telecommunication Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering, administrative and accounts section, the chamber of the Principal, seminar hall and a data center. The B S Narayan memorial block houses the Library, and the departments of Computer Science and Engineering, Information Science, MCA, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physical Education. The administrative block houses the chambers of Director and the Chairperson, the Board Room, the department of Architecture, and a branch of Allahabad Bank.
Students commute to and from the college through several means, including college buses that ply to various parts of the city, public transport, personal transportation and on foot.
On- and off-campus hostels for boys and girls, with double and triple seater dorm-rooms are provided to a limited number of boarders from all over the country, and few off shore students. There are two blocks of on-campus boys' hostels, an off-campus girls' hostel, and an off-campus boy's hostel that accommodates students who couldn't be accommodated in the on-campus hostels. Off-campus boarders commute to the college through a free shuttle service. In addition to the existing hostel blocks, a proposal of construction of an on-campus girls' hostel has gained approval, and the construction of a storey, to house off-shore students in one of the on-campus hostel blocks is underway.
Internet connectivity is available on computers in the Internet Centre, that may be used by students and staff during college hours, and by means of a restricted-access Wi-Fi network through access points located in many strategic points throughout the campus, providing internet access to students and staff members with wireless devices, on the fly.

The college also supports environmental measures. The main Avenue is flanked on either side by green covers, the irrigation of which is done with waste water of the campus, treated in the water treatment plant. The hot water storage and supply system of the on campus boarding is entirely solar powered. The campus also houses an environmental-friendly cafeteria.
The library is fully computerized using the Libsoft software. The library subscribes to over 200 IEL-Online journals (IEEE journals, conference proceedings, transactions & standards) and also subscribes to several national and international journals.
The college has a teaching staff of all ranks from various sectors and fields of engineering, as well as non-teaching staff to aid the students.
The Placement cell at BMSIT helps students avail placements in the core industrial sector, as well as in both, the Information Technology and Information Technology Enabled Sectors.

The Melton Foundation was established in 1991 to build a worldwide community of talented people from diverse cultures capable of addressing global issues based on principles of open communication and mutual respect.
The core activities of the Melton Foundation are made possible through an endowment provided by William Melton and Patricia Smith Melton in partnership with five host universities located in Chile, China, Germany, India, and the United States.
Utsaha
Utsaha is the annual intra-collegiate symposium hosted by the college on its campus, in March or April every year. Several literary, cultural, academic and musical events are held, and the winners are duly rewarded.

This college has to be the shittiest most overhyped overrated colleges in the entire country.Nothing here is upto the mark.First of all let me get some facts straight.This college has a huge kannada bias.Now i am a tamilian who settled in north india for most of my childhood.This is my first time here in karnataka.i got around 900 rank in comedk exam and on the recommendation of many of my relatives and friends i joined the college in the mechanical department last year.Biggest mistake ever.
From the dumbass management who scold students for not knowing kannada to the worst possible teachers who suck out every interest in studying from a student.
The less said about the student crowd the better.about 60 percent are management idiots who have neither a fucking clue about nor interest in engineering.Out of the remaining 40 who have taken admission through merit half of them hv come through reservation.
The hostels are populated by the worst possible people ever.The north indians who hv mostly cone through management only care about girls,booze and drugs.Now i am nt saying that they are bad coz u need these things too(the former 2 not necessarily the latter) at times.But when a person entirely bases his whole life upon it then you come to terms that you seriously need to avoid such people.The south indian guys are way better than them.they are hardworking,modest and helpful.But they kind of stay in their own comfort zone and our not as comfortablein talking as their nort indian counterparts(maybe because of thelanguage problem).So as a person who fits both these criterias i hv given u this first hand description
All of it is not bad though.The campus though small is well maintained and the mess food is more tolerable than many in other colleges.Plus bangalore is a very trendy and happening city and there r many good places worth visiting.But if studying is ur main aim u hv to look elsewhere.
Firstly one must not expect great things when it comes to academics here.Do not get into this misunderstanding that the crowd,teachers and facilities will be upto the mark of IITS/BITS/NITS coz it is not.
On a side note.All this is my personal opinion so before everyone reading this think that some random asshole from some other college is bitching about bms then u r verry very wrong indeed.And if u think that what i am saying is wrong and u think bms is a nice college then i am pretty cool with it.I think opinions differ from person to person.Maybe I have not seen the good things here or u havent seen the bad.There r sm people who like a movie like 3 idiots a lot while some dont.That doesnt mean that the people who dont like it are foolish or stupid.It is just their opinion.So we must respect everyone's opinions.
Well, it depends on your expectation level really...
While going into something you don't know about, it certainly helps to have an open mind..
Of course one would be pushing the limits by comparing it with an IIT or NIT..
Of the colleges in Bangalore, the erstwhile PESIT looks to be the benchmark currently with regard to academics.

And BMS most certainly is continually lagging behind compared to RV and PESIT in this domain..
Well coming to answering the question,
The Atmosphere - Well in this regard it really would be unwise to expect more..
"Overall" the atmosphere is amazing..I mean it really is a hip and happening place..
But if you're only study oriented and need the Temple of Knowledge kind of atmosphere, of course you won't get it here..There will always be like minded people though, and you must seek them out and spend more time with them..Regarding extra curriculars and sports, well it really is the
Holy Grail..It simply is the best..To experience it, just come to the college during Utsav or when the college football team is playing their match..It is an arena like experience with the zing in the air..Its electric..There are many awesome clubs in the college which are awesome like the quizzing club and
the fine arts club..There are also some duds like the EDC which quite a few students join to get attendance!!So all in all the atmosphere is good compared to other colleges(read PESIT) or even otherwise..
The Management - They really are money minded and sometimes their approach just undermines the past reputation of the college..Foremost in their priority list is to earn accreditation which is a step towards securing University status..Once the University status is got, then there is no limit to the money
they can earn..And there is a lot of management quota intake which just reduces the student quality by a great deal..These students are there for the sake of the BE degree and don't give a damn about learning..They aim to just pass in the exams and copy a lot..They disturb the class and aid in creating an unwholesome atmosphere..Also, the man who is responsible for the day to day running of the college, the Principal, is average at best, worst at worst..He really doesn't know how to talk..During the student interaction and review program,
all he did was ridicule the questioner and divert the conversation to some other topic..Many teachers openly talk badly about him..He really looks like a bad precedent..Also the credit based system is not being used according to its
strengths and in most cases is a misnomer..One has to register for the Make Up exam (if required) if one is not sure,
before the results of a costly reval. are out..So to learn how to make a quick buck, one need look no further..
The Teaching - Well, some teachers are role models (very few), others are mediocre (many), while some (quite a few) - the
lesser said the better..The best teachers are really awesome and true blue professionals..They emphasize on learning to gain knowledge and not
mugging to pass exams..Their lectures are amazing and their qualifications and work in their field astounding..If you are lucky you will have them teaching you because they are few and far..There are a lot of mediocre teachers who are
satisfied by doing their job strictly as much as required and in a lot of cases, a lot less..They don't care about the student understanding the concepts but they care about attendance..Some know a lot about their subject but don't know how to teach(unfortunately)..Then there are instances to highlight the last category..
-- A teacher in the first year course on CCP lab actually sleeps during class and she starts dozing during viva..It might be a health problem but it sure is not professional..
-- Another teacher in the EME course just comes to class, reads from the textbook word to word (and makes quite a few mistakes in the process) and is even too lazy to draw figures..So he asks the students do draw them on the board..He takes attendance 20 min. early.. Doubts are strictly not tolerated..
-- Another teacher in the Chem course is so mild that he won't be able to control even 5th grade kids..The class resembles a market and even the first bench students don't give a damn..
--As texting is too mainstream, some sick students actually watched The Wolf of Wall Street during class on an Xperia Z1..It was the brainchild of the phone owner.. The teacher didn't even notice..
Also there is a lot of politics in many departments and teachers openly bitch about each other..Well this happens everywhere..
So if you are lucky you get a few awesome teachers and many mediocre ones, otherwise you will be rueing your luck..
The Research - Well this is not IISC or IIT.. So almost nothing happens!!Even if the awesome teachers are interested, they do their research at IISC and not at the college coz there are no facilities and almost certainly no aid..
The Placements - Here the college can't be blamed.. The companies come to see the students and not the college..They want the best representatives.. The ones who can represent their company in the best way.. Its business not charity..If the students are brilliant, I think the college can ensure placements in dream companies..Also it is great to see that inspite of everything, there is almost 90% record in the IT related departments (That's awesome taking into account the quality of a lot students) , albeit in low tier companies..
All said, one must always be the change one wishes to see..
There are a lot of things which can be done much more ideally in BMS..
Like improving the curriculum and updating it..
One must also applaud PESIT for having a Math curriculum which is branch specific..
But we must also look at ourselves before placing blame..
A great case study would be the Mech department.. Awesome students(in general) backed by awesome teachers..
A very professional department with emphasis on discipline and learning..The results are there for everyone to see..
To get the best out of the college and yourself (which is more important),
You have to take the initiative..
Find the right friends.. Study a lot on your own,be inspired..
Don't be deterred by what you see around you coz there will be a lot of people just doing nothing..
Seek out and learn from the few successful alumni..
Take help of the few brilliant teachers..Intern at good institutions like a few have done..
Make the best use of the awesome extracurriculars after finding your interests..
If you have a project to do, try to see if the department can help you..
Keep a good rapport with the teachers (everyone)..
Have a purpose and stay true to that..
Rise above the average..

Trust me, all of us make fun of the students hoping to join BMSCE, who enter the gates of the college expecting a robust learning experience filled with intellectual personalities who will leave you amazed every now and then; only to see their expectations fall flat on their face once they experience it for themselves.
That being said, I was, like Aparajita Raychaudhury, a student of the Computer Science Department. And our experiences are fairly similar since both of us have had the same lecturers right from day one. :P
Almost all of the lecturers that I have encountered in BMSCE were bad, amd that's putting it lightly. The teaching is sometimes plain hopeless because teachers just lift examples from the Text Book, learn the examples by rote and reproduce the same when they're teaching us. Ask them a question that is a tad twisted and they're stumped. Worse so is expecting students to write the examples from the text even in the exam; anything apart from what is in the text and you will lose marks.
I have personally had experiences with lecturers where it appears like they just want students to come and ask them for marks. Why? To bolster their own egos or just for kicks. I don't know. I have lost marks for reasons as silly as putting points in a single paragraph rather than individual points. When I said that whether you read a paragraph or in points, it will be the same, I was told by the lecturer that he doesn't have time to read the entire answer!
A friend in IEM was told he didn't attend an Internal when he actually had written the test. When they checked, his paper was mixed with the empty booklets' bunch. Wonderful!
I wish there would be a day where people understand that I am putting in 75 minutes to write the paper, I definitely deserve 10 minutes of the time of the lecturer in reading my paper and evaluating it appropriately and giving me the marks I deserve.
Oh, one more little story, when we had UNIX Programming, we had to write a program to look for a duplicate file. What did the teacher suggest? Look in a directory for two files with the same name, if they have the same name, they're duplicate. And this teacher has finished her M.Tech. Such is the kind of talent that we possess in the CSE department.
Coming to other departments, I have even heard stories of Internal Papers being sold to students by teachers, teachers willing to pass a student in exchange for money in the SEE and what not. So it is safe to say that there are places where BMSCE really pushes its luck with its autonomous status and soon to be deemed university status.
I discovered the absolute hopelessness of the department in the final year. The kind of questions we were asked during our project presentations were awe inspiring. The most memorable one I remember is one of my friends being asked if JavaScript was an object of Java. Also, after we had submitted our project synopsis, the guide came back and asked us confidently if the project was about image processing, after having claimed to have read the synopsis when the synopsis had no mention of the word image.
But there are few in the department who actually know their stuff. But the number is so low that they're almost forgotten. But yes, there are some real gems who might be missed out in all the sea of mediocrity.
The management? Haha. The less said the better. Right from the helplessness a student feels to pay the fees at the beginning of the 4 years to getting a Provisional Degree Certificate at the end of 4 years, it is a circus act to get your work done. The guys at the COE office will never, ever print your marks cards in time. And will make you pay for corrections required for spelling errors they commit in the marks cards. The people in power like the HoD, proctor are never present and will make you wait for hours on end to sign a form. Notices are never E-Mailed to students and one must always rely on someone happening to read the Notice Board and informing the rest of the class about the same. What irks me the most is the lack of transparency in the displaying of the grades. They do not tell you how much you've scored in the final exam nor do they tell you what marks they've received your internal marks to be! How am I to know exactly how I've done? I may have had 50 in the internals and got just 50 in the SEE, I would still end up with an A, but I deserve to know how much I scored to make an informed decision on whether revaluation would really help. The people at the administrative office are people who will ask you to wait for 4 days so that they can remove your original 10th and II PUC marks cards from the cupboards. Oh, by the way, your original marks cards? They will have punch holes through them. See what I mean by the less said the better? And the various offices around the college are all engaged in a power struggle where one wants to show that it is more powerful than the other. The losers at the end of this whole fiasco are the students. And the timeliness of the results, what can I say, it took them an entire semester to announce the results of the Make Up examinations of the December/January examinations. The revaluation results took longer and now, the Make Up revaluation is ongoing. God alone knows when those results will be announced. What baffled me recently was this, Supplementary Semester registrations had begun on the 17th and ended on the 21st when the first results came out on the 20th and the 21st itself and the last results to be announced were announced on the 23rd. Does the college expect people to register for the Supplementary Semester thinking that they might end up with an F or an X? What about those who unexpectedly end up with an F? They'll need to wait for the Supplementary Semester next year to complete the course.
Research? I know only 1 lecturer from the CSE department who is actually into research. But I have heard of the Mechanical Department and the Medical Electronics departments also doing their bit in research.
But I sometimes feel that all of these shortcomings can be overlooked by the atmosphere that this college provides. It is absolutely lovely. There was(Have heard certain departments becoming stricter after the recent NBA visit) absolute freedom. There is no compulsion to wear particular kinds of clothing, to where you sit, to where you sleep to where you stand and talk or to who you talk. Nothing. The trees, the dogs, the surroundings! My friends have slept on the floor in the PG Block, had teachers walk by them who would just smile. We have even spent lonely nights in the PG Block completing our project with no one asking us any questions. We even used to eat at random places and no one would say a thing. No one would question you as to why you didn't attend their class. Parents are completely out of the loop.

Overall, BMSCE is by itself not the place you expect it to be when you first enter its portals, but if you try hard enough, you can fulfill all of those expectations you set for yourself when you first started off. But trust me when Isay that you will not regret your 4 years when you're leaving.
